Petition updateHamilton Police to wear body Cameras when responding

How cameras and defunding relate

Hi everyone,

As you might have heard there was a recent motion presented by councillor Chad Collins (ward 5), for the Police Services Board to outline what cutting the Police budget by 20% would look like. This ill intentioned motion was done in an attempt to show that it would be "impossible" to reduce funding by this amount.

I would like to make it clear that I firmly believe that regardless of whether the police service experiences a reduction in funding, responding officers should be equipped with body cameras. This simple act makes is considerably more difficult for officers to abuse their authority or act above the law when handling situations.

The police service had a surplus of over 1.4 million dollars this year and the board has reviewed how to best spend this money, that includes spending $61,040 on Carbine Colt C-8 firearms for front-line officers. I believe this is excessive and an unnecessary use of this money which would be better suited being put towards the purchase of body cams.

I encourage you all to continue talking about this motion, send the link to friends and family, direct others to the link on my instagram (@jasminetandan) or post the link yourself !

Thank you again for the support,

Jasmine Tandan
