I am a liberal furry living in Alabama and am deeply affected by the recent development in Texas—the so called "Furries Act". This act, backed by the radical right, is a strategic maneuver to create a scapegoat out of the innocent furry community instead of addressing the more serious issue of gun violence that imperils the lives of everyday Americans, including those of furries.

It isn't just a cause of great concern for Texan furries but for furries residing in different parts of the country, like myself. This discriminatory legislation can potentially set a dangerous precedent and leak into other states, indirectly affecting all of us. Despite not living in Texas, as a liberal furry, I am indignant over this act and I am not alone.

It is estimated that the furry community in the US is around 60,000, a not insignificant demographic (Przybylo and Morgan, 2021). This act serves as an unwarranted threat to us all. Furthermore, it is undeniable that the shifting focus from gun regulations to intimidating a peaceful community will only exacerbate the issue of gun violence in the country.

We cannot allow existing prejudices to be legislated and used as a tool for spreading fear and division. Let's challenge this unfair legislation not just for the sake of the furry community but for the wellbeing of all Americans who believe in freedom, inclusivity, and justice. We are calling on lawmakers and concerned citizens to oppose this "Furries Act", support the furry community, and redirect the focus towards mitigating the issue of gun violence which claims lives every day.
