The Issue

We need your help to halt the proposed sale of KDR.

  • The terms don’t guarantee the house will remain
  • The timing has been rushed
  • The Board has not effectively articulated why this is the best path and the best time to act

Halting the sale today closes no doors, it is a stay of execution, allowing us more time to explore alternatives and negotiate the strongest way forward for the house. This leaves our options open, including the option to go forward with a future sale to the University.

Why should you sign?

  • You want greater due diligence on the viability of the house remaining independent.
  • You want more details about the absolutes of the current deal and how the Alumni Association eliminated other options to make a more informed decision
  • You want to sell the house, but you believe that KDR should negotiate for stronger terms that formally and contractually codify our legacy (see our proposed additions!)

With the halt of the sale Alumni want to see the following action plan from the Board in its evaluation of the fraternity's options and University's offer:

Exploration of viability of continued long term Independence to be furnished by the Alumni Board prior to the agreement of any sale

  • Dissemination of the full bylaws of the KDR Alumni Association to the brotherhood.
  • Board Minutes for the last 3 years to reflect the timeline of discussion in the lead up to the proposed sale.
  • Reengagement of other bidders / open solicitation of alternate interest groups for strategic long term (5+ year) tenancy, to be conducted by a third party.
  • Accounting of external financial estimates for maintenance and preservation necessary of the exterior of the house.
  • Estimates for internal renovations to ensure viability of long term tenancy by a third party, along with determining the viability of endowment-based fundraising of such a project by Alumni.
  • Biannual Board updates and Zoom meetings to bring Alumni up to speed with house affairs and hold open dialogue.
  • Election of 2 additional Alumni Board Members to partner in the above.

For further consideration of the University's offer, we request the following additions/amendments to the terms presented prior to an agreement of sale:

  • Contractual guarantee the original facade of the house remains in full, beyond Scout’s porch.
  • Contractual guarantee of retention of the memorial tree and associated plaque for the brothers lost in 1988.
  • Formal Establishment of proposed Colgate Union to occur on Feb 22 (year subject to construction timelines), in alignment with the foundation of KDR’s foundation at Colgate in 1917 — symbolizing the handoff, the beginning of a new era that carries on the old (2027 ideal but not mandatory).
  • Colgate Union Logo to incorporate design elements of KDR’s crest — KDR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AND BROTHERHOOD TO APPROVE FINAL DESIGN in partnership with Colgate.
  • FOUR (4) KDR Fellowships, branded “KDR Delta Fellowships,” codifying the Fraternity’s legacy as fourth chapter.
  • KDR Fellowship Scholarships to be awarded from an applicant pool, capped at 76, which will be additive to universal needs-based support from the University.
  • In addition to Reunion, access / inclusion for KDR Brothers to The Colgate Union during any future Homecoming events, so KDR Alumni may have the opportunity to engage with future Fellows, enabling personal connection of past and present.
  • Agreement on final size, language and design of plaque memorializing the history of KDR and our vision for its legacy. To be determined AND APPROVED BY A MAJORITY VOTE OF THE BROTHERHOOD
  • Inclusion of KDR Alumni representatives at any groundbreaking, ribbon cuttings or similar events for buildings on the transferred grounds.
  • Full Page ads in both the Maroon News and Colgate Magazine recognizing KDR’s generosity in the agreement of furnishing its house and land to make the completion of 2030 Lower Campus project a reality. Copy should outline the alignment of the initiative with historical significances of KDR Delta Chapter as detailed above. Layout to feature imagery of the house as it stood as well as any rendering of what is to come. To be signed by Brian Casey and KDR Alumni Association.

The overwhelming majority of the above respects the University’s desire to minimize capital outlay, focusing reinvestment into the property and limiting financial impact. The proposed terms represent the brotherhood's desire to contractually cement the KDR legacy within the future of the property and within the Colgate community
