Halt the Rezoning of the Corner Plot at 17th, Michigan, and Russell Streets

Halt the Rezoning of the Corner Plot at 17th, Michigan, and Russell Streets
The Issue
My name - as well as the names of many others signing this petition - belongs to the community of Saint Cloud, FL - some of us reside around 17th Street, Michigan Street, and Russell Street. The proposed rezoning of this land from a medium density residential area to a high density residential area threatens our way of life and devalues our homes in more ways than one.
Rezoning will pressure the existing infrastructure like local roads, parks, and public utilities that weren't designed to accommodate the increased density. Furthermore, it's predicted to drive down property values in our vicinity, as demonstrated by a study by the Urban Studies Institute, which found that an increase in housing density can lead to a reduction in nearby property values. This essentially translates to us being forced to bear the brunt of falling property prices, disrupting the stability of our living conditions.
In addition to affecting our pocketbooks, our quality of life is at risk. This area is our sanctuary, valued for its low noise and local ambience. The increased population that comes with high density properties will lead to more noise, traffic, pollution, and crime.
Not to mention this area is in a school zone, nestled between St. Cloud High School, St. Cloud Middle School, and Michigan Avenue Elementary School. There are a ton of children that walk in that area every morning and afternoon during the school year. Half of 17th Street doesn't have a sidewalk and an increase in traffic will be a danger to our children!
Also, environmentally, this is a beautiful plot of land with several mature trees that should not be uprooted. Wildlife, such as owls, sandhill cranes, ducks, and white ibises. White ibises help aerate the soil and keep insect populations down, which is crucial in a state like Florida with such a high insect population. Let's not forget that sandhill cranes are a protected species.
This petition raises our collective voice against this rezoning proposal. We refuse to stand by while our neighborhoods are sacrificed for urban densification. The measure is a financial mayhem for us, the residents, and it's detrimental to the character and tranquility of the neighborhoods we love.
We earnestly request our city planners, urban authorities, and all decision-making bodies to reconsider this proposition, taking into account its repercussions on the people it directly affects - us. Only one person will benefit from this rezoning and that is the owner of the property. His plan is to build an apartment complex, which puts money into his own pocket while the rest of us suffer. Your support through your signature will strengthen our appeal and demonstrate that we, as homeowners and residents, will steadfastly protect our community.
Please sign this petition today, sustain the integrity of our neighborhood, and ensure that our living values do not diminish.
