Urgent: Save the Mangroves of Puerto Morelos

A massive threat looms over the lush mangroves of Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo. An enormous real estate development project is set to decimate a significant portion of our precious mangrove forest, a move that will have catastrophic consequences if we don't act now.

These mangroves are not just a beautiful part of our landscape; they are the lifeblood of our local ecosystem. Acting as vital nurseries for countless marine species, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide, and providing crucial coastal protection, they are indispensable.

The World Wildlife Fund warns that destroying these habitats will lead to a dramatic decline in fish populations, devastating our local fishermen's livelihoods and irreparably damaging the beaches and town we all cherish.

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for this project spans a daunting 443 pages, designed to overwhelm and discourage public scrutiny.

 But within these pages lie the truths that we, as stewards of our environment, must confront and challenge.

If this development proceeds, the fallout will be immense:

1. Our local wildlife will suffer and diminish.
2. Fishermen who rely on healthy mangroves will find their livelihoods at risk.
3. Our beautiful beaches will be compromised.
4. The overall health of our town’s environment will deteriorate, impacting everyone who lives here.

Mangroves are NATURAL PROTECTED AREAS, and allowing this project to move forward sets a dangerous precedent for further environmental destruction. The fate of our mangrove forest and the well-being of Puerto Morelos are in our hands.

We, the residents, must rise up to stop this. Though non-Mexican residents may face legal barriers in direct political action, we all have the power to make our voices heard by local authorities.
