Halt the Proposed Indwell Development at 1639 Lakeshore Road W.
The Issue
The Clarkson & Lorne Park Coalition of Concerned Citizens are a group of neighbors and families (many with young children) living in Lorne Park and Clarkson (in Mississauga - Ward 2). In response to recent announcements regarding the proposed Indwell development at 1639 Lakeshore Road West, we are raising our concerns for the location of the proposed development and for the lack of community consultation in the selection and development process. We believe there are numerous safety risks and other potential impacts that the development may pose to Clarkson Village and the surrounding community and we urge local government and leaders to stop the proposal and reconsider whether the site in Clarkson is the best location for this development.
Our community is home to numerous schools, daycares, parks, supportive housing for abused women and children and seniors’ homes, all of which are considered vulnerable sectors in the immediate proximity of the proposed development. We understand the facility will provide supportive, independent housing for individuals with mental health or addiction issues (in line with Indwell’s other properties in the province). Our primary concern lies with ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable sectors in the community, and we believe the proposed facility may compromise this safety and create other negative impacts to Clarkson Village and its current residents.
Given the potential implications for this type of development within Clarkson Village, local residents are deeply concerned by the complete lack of consultation regarding a development that may alter the fabric of the community. While we recognize that supportive housing facilities - like Indwell residences - meet a critical need for their clients, we believe that the selection of 1639 Lakeshore Road West as a site for the proposed facility reflects a decision taken without adequate or informed consideration of the potential impacts to key stakeholders, including local residents.
We urge our municipal and provincial governments and their leaders, including Alvin Tedjo (Ward 2 Councilor) and Charles Sousa (MP, Mississauga - Lakeshore) to reconsider this proposal with proper public consultation and consider alternatives before allowing this development to progress.
We have organized and a GoFundMe. Your contributions towards legal fees and other services and expenditures encountered to defend the safety and protection of the Clarkson Lorne Park community require your generous financial participation to continue a strong defense with government officials, and possible courts. While legal fees can easily mount if we all go about our concerns as individuals, our collective effort and participation establishes strength in the community and allows the community's Coalition to move forward with defending your rights to safety and protection as taxpayers, citizens, and residents/business owners of the Clarkson Lorne Park community. Thank you for supporting a cause that will most certainly affect your daily living and business in the Clarkson Lorne Park community.
