FINALLY!!! After many long weeks, months even of begging for a community meeting to discuss the shelter proposition at 66 Third Street - it's here.. it's really here...
If you have questions, bring them - we have a lot.. such as :
What was the Criteria the City used for determining that this very deeply flawed location was the right place to build an 80+ person Emergency homeless shelter?
This Shelter will have HARM REDUCTION services - do you know what that means?
In case you don't , it means that this shelter location will be providing the following items:
Safer injection equipment
needles and syringes in various sizes and brands
sterile water
alcohol swabs
tourniquets
filters
acidifiers
cookers
Safer smoking equipment
Pyrex stems
brass screens
chopsticks
mouthpieces
safer crystal meth smoking equipment
glass bowl pipes
Safer sex products
condoms
lube
As this location rests beside a seniors residence, between two junior middle schools and on the same street as a park with a kids area, rink and wading pool - do you think, reading the list of items supplied to residents that this indicates a very clear risk to your children and other vulnerable people in the area?
The city owns a heck of a lot of land - and yet, this was the one that they selected?
Why?
How about - why our elected representative, Amber Morley has continued to be absent and unresponsive to the needs of those who voted her in for over two months?
she has attended many events in Etobicoke, including one to support a new development at Kipling and Bloor that will not have any shelters or supportive housing.
Why is New Toronto being used as a dumping ground for the cities most challenging issues and not being considered for more sustainable projects like affordable housing and some much needed business development?
Please come and ask your questions, show your support for the community that you live in, work in and love.
We need you! See you tomorrow ( Monday February 10th) at 5pm -( will run until 8pm) Humber College Campus - BUILDING G
