I am a parent of three children who attend the elementary school in Las Haciendas, Victorville, CA known as “RB21”. Our home is less than 1,000 feet away from this school that has become an integral part of our lives. It has come to my attention that there are plans to construct a gas station right next to our beloved school. This is not just concerning for my family but for all families whose children attend this school.

Gas stations pose significant health risks due to air pollution caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during fueling and from underground storage tanks. According to the American Lung Association, exposure to these pollutants can cause short-term effects like dizziness and headaches and long-term effects such as respiratory problems and even cancer.

Furthermore, traffic congestion around gas stations could pose safety risks for our children walking or biking to school. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nearly one-fifth of child pedestrian fatalities occur when they are coming or going from school.

Violent crimes have also been linked to service stations and Gas stations.  A recent study conducted in January 2022 by the National institutes of health concluded that gas stations have a higher violent crime rate than any other business establishment nationwide. 

This proposed construction threatens the health and safety of our children – it's simply unacceptable. We must prioritize the well-being of our kids over commercial interests.
