The Issue

I am a resident of Landenberg, PA, and I deeply cherish the tranquility and natural beauty that our town offers. Our land is meant to be preserved, not built on. The proposed construction of a large campground with RV’s, cabins and/or yurts threatens to disrupt this peaceful environment that we call home and the delicate balance that supports 15 rare and endangered plant species.

The development will inevitably lead to increased noise levels, potential harm to local wildlife habitats, including the rare and endangered plants, and increased traffic on already taxed roads. According to the U.S National Park Service, campgrounds can have significant impacts on local ecosystems if not properly managed (source: U.S National Park Service). This includes soil erosion, water pollution from waste disposal systems, and disturbance of wildlife. There is also concern about the effects on air quality from campfire smoke.

Moreover, our quiet town is one of the few remaining places where residents can enjoy peace away from bustling city life. The introduction of a large campground complex of more than just a few primitive campsites could attract an influx of visitors which may disturb this serenity.

We understand the potential economic benefits such infrastructure might bring but believe that preserving nature's sanctity should be prioritized over short-term gains.

Therefore, we urge our local government officials and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to reconsider their decision about building this large campground complex. Let's protect our home's tranquility for future generations instead of altering it irreversibly for transient benefits.

Please sign this petition if you too believe in preserving Big Elk Creek State Park’s peaceful nature over recreational development.
