Halt the Closure and Secret Sale of the Jubilee Hall Gym in Covent Garden

The Issue

We call on the Trustees of the Jubilee Hall Gym in Covent Garden to reverse their decision to secretly sell the lease of the gym to a private developer that will force its closure.

Since the 1970s, when Jubilee Hall withstood the GLC's planned bulldozing of the area to create a network of roads, the gym has been a central part of the local community. Thousands of people have benefited from and found sanctuary within Jubilee Hall, not only through exercise but by being part of a safe, diverse community. Even today, large numbers of people from disadvantaged and marginalised communities benefit from this long-standing community resource.

Since nearly £1m was stolen by a former member of staff, the impact of the global pandemic and recent increased cost pressures, the gym’s management and Trustees have failed to balance the books. However, we believe they should not give up and should fully consult with stakeholders and industry experts to decide the best course of action so that revenue can be increased, expenditure becomes more efficient, and the gym continues to impact positively on the Covent Garden (and wider) community for years to come.

Losing the gym would mean fewer fitness options, less recreational space, and a loss of community cohesion. Therefore, we implore decision-makers involved to reconsider any plans to sell and close down the gym.

Sign this petition to oppose the secret sale of one of the last remaining community assets in the Covent Garden area and to demand a full and transparent consultation with its stakeholders.
