Halt the ₹72,000-crore Great Nicobar project
The Issue
I am writing this petition to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the proposed ₹72,000-crore Mega Development Project on Great Nicobar Island. This project is deeply personal to me because I believe that the choices we make today will shape the future of our planet. Watching a million ancient trees being cut down and a pristine ecosystem destroyed in the name of 'progress' feels like a loss to our collective future. We are facing a global climate crisis, and destroying one of the last remaining untouched rainforests is something I cannot watch silently. As a young person, I care deeply about aesthetics, the natural beauty of our world, and the legacy we leave behind.
Great Nicobar Island is a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous endemic and endangered species. Its rich and unique ecosystem, with its lush rainforests, mangroves, and coral reefs, plays a critical role in maintaining global biodiversity. The impact of this mega development project extends beyond local boundaries, threatening the survival of countless species and contributing to the worldwide loss of biodiversity.
Moreover, the project poses a substantial threat to the indigenous communities who have lived in harmony with this land for centuries. These communities depend on the island's resources for their livelihoods and cultural practices. The development project risks displacing these communities, eroding their traditional ways of life and leading to cultural extinction.
Although economic growth is important, it should not come at the expense of ecological and cultural devastation. Sustainable development approaches must be prioritized, focusing on projects that are environmentally friendly and inclusive of local communities. I urge the authorities to halt this project immediately and reconsider its environmental and social impacts.
We call for a comprehensive and transparent re-evaluation of the Great Nicobar Project, ensuring that it aligns with global goals for environmental conservation and the protection of indigenous rights. Let us protect our planet's invaluable natural heritage and ensure that development does not compromise our environment and local communities.
Together, we can make a difference. Please join me in signing this petition to prevent irreversible damage to Great Nicobar Island and its inhabitants. Your support can help ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
