SAVE OUR WILDLIFE-DEMAND MORATORIUM TO STOP OVERDEVELOPING-CHANGE UDO in Brunswick County
The Issue
**I'm sick of riding down our roads seeing dead wildlife, clearcutting for cookie cutter housing that is priced above market value, and million dollar homes above residents reach. We are one of the fastest growing counties in NC and it needs to STOP NOW! We do not have the infrastructure to bring in 100,000+ more residents!:Our schools are almost at capacity, some are at it. Our biggest hospital is smaller than many other cities and we are sending residents to Myrtle Beach which is overcrowded. Our other hospital is VERY small and is out of reach to about 80% of our residents, it's in Southport. Our community thrives off tourism, but with barrier islands and congestion going over our bridges to get to the islands/beaches, congestion on our roads (that about 90% need repairing), we will lose that, alot of businesses will close thats been here for years, decades. We need a farm land protected! STOP CLEARCUTTING! We NEED our trees, root systems, marshes and wetlands (that they are just draining and filling in) to help with flooding! Our natural habitats are disappearing! Our coastal community calls out schools and closes from a day or 2 of rain because of flooding now! Whats going to happen when 100s of thousands of more acres trees, marshes, wetlands are gone??!! We NEED A MORATORIUM NOW! WE NEED TO STOP THE OVERDEVELOPING AND DEAL WITH THE EFFECTS OF THE MASSIVE GROWTH THATS COMING! IF OUR COMMISSIONERS ARE GOING TO APPROVE 99.9% OF ALL DEVELOPING AND NOT LISTEN TO THEIR COMMUNITY, THEY NEED TO BE FIRED! THIS IS GOING NATIONWIDE! WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH** As residents of Brunswick County, we are witnessing firsthand the detrimental effects of overdevelopment. Our county, our home, is not equipped with the necessary infrastructure to accommodate an increasing population. We see it every day - our roads are congested, our public services are stretched thin and our natural environment is under threat.
Our Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), which guides how land is developed in our county, has not been updated since 2015. In this time span, Brunswick County has undergone significant changes that have not been reflected in this outdated UDO. Developers have taken advantage of this situation by building wherever they can acquire land without considering the impact on local communities and wildlife.
The consequences of such unchecked development are evident all around us. Foxes roam our beaches and yards searching for food as their natural habitats shrink due to construction activities. Our precious wetlands - vital ecosystems that support a rich diversity of life - face constant threats from encroaching development.
We need to put a stop to overdevelopment now before it's too late for Brunswick County's unique character and biodiversity. It's time for an updated UDO that reflects current realities and prioritizes sustainable growth over short-term profit. We need a moratorium!
This petition calls on local authorities to halt further development until a comprehensive review and update of the UDO can be conducted with community input at its heart. Let us work together towards a future where growth does not come at the expense of community wellbeing or environmental integrity.
Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving what makes Brunswick County special while planning responsibly for its future.
