As a dedicated resident of North Brunswick and a fierce advocate for sustainable development, I am compelled to raise my voice against the planned construction of a data center and monstrous warehouse in our township. Having consistently opposed similar projects across New Jersey, I have become intimately familiar with the fleeting advantages and significant adverse impacts that accompany such developments.

Luckily, North Brunswick Township residents have stood up, spoken out, shown up and collaborated to make progress against an ill advised redevelopment plan.

We pushed council to prohibit data centers. Now we must push them to recognize the proposed Ordinance 26-13a development of a sprawling warehouse structure still presents many of the same community problems as a data center. 

A 300,000 square foot warehouse is not a better option. We will undoubtedly experience environmental impacts, water table issues, property value reductions, increased traffic, and increased pollution. 

North Brunswick Township occupies  10 square miles. Our residents do not want a warehouse the size of over 5 football fields affecting every aspect of suburban living. 

We are not against development. We are against sprawling warehouses to be built 100 ft from homes and schools. We have a fundamental right to a livable, healthy community.

We are one step closer to success. 

Project Manager of the Global Clean Air at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) found that communities are impacted by warehouse pollution, but also diesel truck pollution. The chemicals emitted into the atmosphere are harmful for humans to breathe in. 

“It is associated with diseases like premature death, cancer, asthma, COPD, and stroke,” Becker said. “It is also important to keep in mind that these diseases are disproportionately impacting children and older people.”

Warehouses can necessitate intensive sewage, drainage and other infrastructure development—some of which will fall on the tax payer. 

The already limited areas for wildlife will further be encroached upon. 

It is vital that we prioritize thoughtful, community-centered development that aligns with our ecological and social values. Instead of data centers and warehouses, let's push for projects that truly benefit our residents—be it through green spaces, renewable energy initiatives, or facilities that bolster our community's wellbeing without compromising its future.
