Thank you to all signees and the residents of North Brunswick Township.

For three months our neighbors and community showed up to council meetings, organized independently, pooled knowledge and expertise, contacted experts,  spoke with journalists, and communicated with aligned organizations in NJ.

Citizens took on the jobs and tasks elected officials failed to perform.  That is—residents of North Brunswick Township performed comprehensive and proper due diligence on the prospective plan and the potential impact on the ten square miles and 43,000 residents call home.

_____

After over a decade of unopposed elections, perhaps the governing body of North Brunswick has forgotten the societal contract they entered. This government is a public trust. Our elected officials are merely temporary (not inevitable) stewards of our government. This power is delegated not surrendered.

Dialogue, thoughtfulness,  commonality of purpose and the proactive fight for the community’s best interests are fundamental to this contract.

Our citizens retain that power. When erosion of trust occurs and proposals, processes, and behaviors are divergent from the public good—citizens reclaim that power.

I hope this is understood.
