As a resident of Kailua-Kona, HI, I was deeply disturbed by the Halloween "Hell House" production hosted by King’s Church this year. The event was hauntingly terrifying for all the wrong reasons. It was not just a harmless Halloween thrill but rather an intentional deception designed to indoctrinate unsuspecting visitors.

The lack of information made available about the nature of this event was clearly intentional. People were lured into their lair with no means of escape and led booth by booth through some of the most traumatizing real-life scenes one could imagine. This is not what we expect from a community event in our town.

The use of fear and shock tactics as a form of religious indoctrination is not only unethical but also potentially harmful, particularly to young people who may be more susceptible to such tactics (American Psychological Association). We should strive for open dialogue and understanding rather than resorting to manipulation and deceit.

We are calling on local authorities in Kailua-Kona to prevent this event from taking place next year. Our community deserves better - we deserve events that bring us together in joy and celebration, not ones that exploit our fears under the guise of entertainment.
