The Issue

We need the Mayor and Trustees of the Village of Manorhaven to take immediate action. We request that new residential development, especially projects requiring variances that exceed the current building code limitations, be halted until a comprehensive plan has been developed for the future of the region. This is not about stifling growth; it is about ensuring that growth is sustainable, thoughtful, and beneficial for our community.

Residents of Manorhaven and Manhasset Isle are at a crossroads. This currently tranquil region is steadily inching towards a breaking point due to overdevelopment caused by new high-density residential projects. Our community's charm and lifestyle are at risk. These developments, which favor profit over community, often receive variances that exceed existing building codes.

Manhasset Isle's capacity is nearing its limit with the one and only road leading in and out becoming increasingly congested. The existing infrastructure will strain under further excessive development. Parking, sewer systems, cell service—all will be affected by overcrowding.

Native wildlife is also at risk. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, overdevelopment threatens local biodiversity, disrupting natural habitats and straining resources.

Part of the beauty of our community is that we’re able to cohabitate with local wildlife. One can tell the changing of the seasons simply by observing the annual migration of birds such as bald eagles, osprey, owls, least tern, buffleheads, and plovers. We can be proud to be among the few towns in Nassau County where foxes are able to survive and raise their kit.

What will become of our village if we overdevelop every bit of available land?

The Village of Manorhaven lacks a comprehensive plan for the future of our village. Without such a strategy, we cannot properly assess the impact of these developments and make informed decisions to protect our community.

Mayor Popeleski, Deputy Mayor Harry Farina, and Trustees Monica Ildefonso, Khristine Shahipour, and Jeff Stone have the opportunity—right now—to shape the future of our beloved home. Decisions made today will leave a permanent impact.

We demand that these decisions are INFORMED decisions. We need an all-encompassing approach to development, not piece-meal approvals of individual projects without considering the whole picture.

Help us preserve our unique community and its delicate balance. Show your support by signing this petition. Let's urge the Village of Manorhaven to implement a sensible and sustainable development strategy for the future of Manorhaven and Manhasset Isle and halt new residential development until they do so.
