The recent spending bill that has been brought before Congress includes an unfair provision that would see their salaries increase. These pay raises would be funded by the taxpayers, many of whom continue to face economic difficulties consequent to the pandemic. In a country where the average annual wage is $56,516 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020), congressional members currently receive a substantial salary of $174,000 per year (Congressional Research Service, 2020). It is critical to question the fairness and necessity of an additional salary increase amidst such times of hardship for the citizens they serve. Therefore, we request an immediate halt to the vote on the recent spending bill with the provision for pay raises for Congress members. We ask for a more considerate and equitable financial legislation that reflects the economic realities of those they represent.
