We urge Hackney Council to go ahead with a proposed traffic filtering scheme in London Fields Ward for a cleaner, greener and fume-free neighbourhood. 

Hackney is one of the most polluted London boroughs with pollution levels exceeding European legal limits for toxic NO2 gas. Adult mortality due to air pollutants is one of the highest, 7th out of 33 London boroughs. Only 34% of households have cars so most of the problem is due to rat-running traffic.

6,000 motor vehicles a day pass through Middleton Road and this has increased a lot over last year. The whole London Fields neighbourhood suffers from rat-running traffic with high levels of danger, noise and pollution.

The City Hall is now providing funding for 'Quietways' along Route 2 (Bloomsbury to Walthamstow) in London Fields Ward. This is a great opportunity for traffic filters to be put in to reduce rat-running. 

We therefore urge the Council to go ahead with a trial to remove rat-running motor traffic from our neighbourhood. A trial is essential so that we can see how the scheme works, 'before and after' traffic counts can be done and we can make informed decisions about the scheme.

At the end of the day we all want streets where children can play out without fear of danger and pollution, where there are more flowers and trees, and where everyone from school children to pensioners can walk, scoot, and cycle in comfort and safety.
