STOP OIL & GAS EXPLORATION OFF SOUTH AFRICA
The Issue
Shell’s oil and gas exploration on South Africa's Wild Coast will be destructive for people and nature. We need your help to try and stop it! Join a global movement and sign the petition to urge Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy to immediately STOP Shell from conducting a seismic survey in this area NOW.
South Africa is home to the critically endangered leatherback sea-turtle and 37 species of whales and dolphins, who are extremely vulnerable to acute and chronic noise pollution from the blasting of airguns during seismic surveys for offshore oil & gas deposits.
South African citizens and environmentalists are invited to sign this petition to highlight the opposition to these activities in Europe, and indeed all over the world, amidst a biodiversity and climate crises, where there has never been a bigger need to "build back better", and to transition to carbon neutral energy systems. Oil & gas extraction and the harmful surveys that enable the identification of oil reserves should be immediately stopped in the diverse marine waters of South Africa, to protect the local biodiversity, fisheries communities and for the South African government to uphold its promises during the recent IUCN Climate Conference.
'Royal Duth Shell" began seismic surveys for fossil fuel extraction off South Africa on December 1st, and it is expected the project could last up to 5 months in duration, before drilling will begin, adding additional sound stressors to the marine environment. These surveys are during the peak whale season and is a substantial threat to the welfare and survival of breeding whales and their calves.
Please SIGN below to urge the South African Government to STOP OIL & GAS Surveys NOW!!!
