Guernsey rents

Guernsey rents
The Issue
Enough Is Enough. Guernsey Needs Rent Control.
This island’s rental market is taking the piss, and everyone knows it.
On just over £12 an hour minimum wage, explain how anyone is meant to afford £1,400+ a month for a room. Not a flat. A room. That’s not “the market” — that’s daylight robbery being normalised.
The system is rigged. We import key workers (which we need), give them local market status, and often pay half their rent through relocation packages. Landlords know this, so they crank rents up because someone else will cover it. Locals don’t stand a chance.
People born here are being priced out of their own island while landlords cash in. Young people can’t move out, single workers are screwed, and the advice is always the same: share more or leave. That’s not a solution — that’s failure.
This isn’t supply and demand. It’s greed with no limits.
Guernsey needs rent control. Caps on increases. Limits on room pricing. Basic protection so housing stops being treated like a cash machine.
Do nothing and this only gets worse. People are already at breaking point.
