This issue hits close to home as both of my grandmothers suffer from health issues such as Cancer & Alzheimer’s disease and are frequently left waiting for medical appointments. Their situation is not an isolated case in the UK; Many, if not all, have experienced or heard of someone struggling to get the healthcare they need. 

According to King’s Fund, an independent charity working to improve health and care in England, about a quarter of patients waited more than a month for a hospital outpatient appointment in 2019. The waiting period has been steadily increasing over the years, suggesting a systemic issue with healthcare availability (King’s Fund, 2019). This situation is unacceptable and improvement is long overdue.

Healthcare is a fundamental right and should be readily available to everyone, irrespective of their situation. The UK government and the health authorities should take immediate steps to ensure that adequate healthcare is available to every citizen without excessive waiting.
