The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has detected a surge in deforestation in Malaysia over the first quarter of 2014.
The agency's satellite-based Quarterly Indicator of Cover Change (QUICC) recorded an alarming increase of 150% in the number of deforestation signals in Malaysia relative to a five-year baseline.
While natural destruction of forests can actually be a positive thing, clearing out old trees and revitalising the area for the new forest growth, forests demolished by humans will likely never become forests again. Because trees capture and store carbon from atmosphere — carbon that’s released when a tree is cut down — deforestation is a bigger driver of climate change than emissions from cars and trucks.
