The Issue

As a disabled individual, my challenges often stop me from taking good care of a dog. A pet, like a dog, that requires a lot of attention and regular outdoor activities is beyond my capability, but I find solace and comfort in caring for a cat, my constant companion. Cats, I've found, possess an instinctual ability to detect various health complications such as blood pressure problems, heart rate issues, migraines, and even conditions like diabetes. They are sensitive to their owners, supporting even those with mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

The evidence supports these personal experiences. A study from the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Neurology highlights how cats can predict migraines due to their heightened senses (2008). Moreover, researchers from the University College London suggest that cats may be effective in helping reduce feelings of anxiety and increase feelings of calm (2019). Suffice to say, cats are not just pets; they can be life-savers.

Yet, the current legislation doesn’t extend the recognition of service animals to cats. This denies countless people, like myself, the opportunity to benefit from their companionship and service in public spaces and establishments.

Let's break the stereotypes and widened the scopes of service animals to cats. It's time to legally acknowledge the profound support and assistance that cats can provide to disabled individuals. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to include cats in the definition of service animals. We must create an inclusive society that respects and recognizes the contributions of all forms of assistance- both canine and feline. I also believe that with this expansion it would help the legislative process be able to find a better way to have professionals give real certifications to those that have a service animal helping with the rising number of fake service animals.  Thank you for your support.
