The Issue

Aspen is our home and now 455 Rio Grande Place is our workplace thanks to the City of Aspen for granting us this lease.  And thank you to all of you for signing our petition, writing letters in favor of 520 Grill’s move here, and cheering us on when it mattered most. We’re grateful, we’re ready, and we’re excited to get to work building something together!

Thank you,

Troy, May, Remy, and the 520 team

Thank you for considering signing our petition to support granting 520 Grill the lease to the restaurant space at 455 Rio Grande Place - while there is no guarantee presenting a petition to Aspen City Council will move the needle, it's helpful to show the community support behind our family being granted the lease. We welcome signatures from everyone, everywhere.

------------------------

My name is Troy Selby, and for the past 30 years, I've been a dedicated member of the Aspen community, striving to maintain an affordable restaurant for locals and visitors alike. I opened 520 Grill fifteen years ago, however, escalating real estate rates have increasingly challenged my ability to continue providing this service. Given the prohibitive costs of free-market rental space, I need to move from my current location. Securing the lease for the restaurant at 455 Rio Grande Place is not just an opportunity but a necessity for my business to survive and thrive.

Aspen, with its scenic landscape and vibrant culture, has always been a hub for tourists and locals who cherish unique dining experiences. Amid this backdrop, affordable dining options play a crucial role in ensuring that everyone, regardless of income, can enjoy the culinary offerings of Aspen. My restaurant embodies this ethos, offering good food at reasonable prices, thereby contributing to the cultural and economic diversity of the community.

The space at 455 Rio Grande Place, with its city-subsidized lease, presents an invaluable opportunity to continue providing this vital service. Acquiring this lease will allow me not only to remain in business but also to keep providing employment for my dedicated team and maintain a beloved establishment where the community can gather and enjoy quality meals without financial strain.

In communities like Aspen, it's essential to strike a balance between catering to the affluent and supporting long-serving residents and business owners who contribute meaningfully to the area's character. By supporting my petition, you're helping ensure that Aspen remains a place where diverse voices and businesses can flourish.

I urge the Aspen City Council and the decision-makers to recognize the importance of this lease not only for my business but also for the wider community. It is our collective duty to keep Aspen a place where everyone can thrive.

Thank you, Troy, May, and Remy Selby + The 520 Grill Family
