The Issue

On behalf of the Seafarer - Students who registered for Advanced  and Post Graduate International shipping at Durban University of Technology...when Remote learning was offered.

Upon successful completion of Term 1. Our prayers were answered as we successfully secured the "Lifetime" opportunity to embark onboard ships.. whether for inservice training or Employment..

With the understanding that final assessments will be held Remote as done during the 1st Semester... however  on the 2nd Semester the University decided to Opt for Physical exams.. and our case was not considered as students who are already on fixed contracts aboard cargo ships.

Utilizing the limited communication methods, we immediately requested to be considered for special exams, this was well in the beginning of the 2nd Semester,  July 2022. Both the Maritime department and the Faculty of Applied Sciences were already aware of our case. Exams came and we were assured via the Class representative that a special exam will be arranged for "those who are currently at sea".

It came as sudden punch in the face to receive the Below email just last week: "Please note that our request for special exam for students at sea was rejected by EXCO. On Thursday(24/11/2022) I presented their case , in fact this matter was submitted to the Faculty long time go , then Gill said it will be discussed on EXCO meeting. EXCO members said the students knew about the exams but they chose employment over their studies (unfortunately, that’s their thinking) besides all fact mentioned." said the Department of Maritime Studies from DUT.

"I personally would like to thank Durban University of Technology for all this depression and resentment I am experiencing. If wanting the best for my self and to push boundaries is a sin.. so I receive. I'm also sad that the current Generation of Seafarers will suffer the same treatment of not being HEARD and RECOGNIZED by the Institution. All we want is to further our studies and still live. How I was going to pay for my studies should I have stayed at home, unemployed ? I was so looking forward to do my Master's next year but it seems impossible" Reported Another distressed Seafarer.

Being at Sea is Misarable, but being denied access to education and your dreams feels even worse. Fair future for All Seafarers starts now. if South Africa want to be the Maritime Center by 2030.. then changes starts with us. Flexible Education For Seafarers!!
