The Baltimore City region is a perfect site for a WNBA team. With a highly competitive girls high school sports environment and strong collegiate programs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia the women’s sports climate and overall strong fan base would serve as the perfect air of both support and conduit for potential professional athletes. The revenue that would support the team and the city would be instrumental in the continued revitalization of downtown. To build a facility in Port Covington would bring increased walkability on game nights and weekends supporting the restaurant and outdoor harbor vibe. As downtown continues to improve and grow, simultaneously, so will their fanbase. As a father of a high school athlete and basketball player, I not only saw the talent and competition level throughout the Baltimore City region, I also saw the want to support professional sports based entertainment in a city that only has baseball and football, but once had a professional men’s basketball team. The big question has always been around the level of corporate support for a professional men’s team, but women’s basketball is in the spotlight, is increasing their talent levels and crowd sizes and now is the time. Bring the Baltimore City Ospreys to the WNBA!
