Fairness for JUCO Athletes: Start Eligibility Clock at NCAA Institutions

The Issue

The NCAA has taken an important step by recognizing the need for additional eligibility for athletes whose careers were impacted by COVID-19, mental health challenges, and JUCO transitions. This move reflects what so many athletes, coaches, and programs have been calling for: fairness.

For years, players have navigated unprecedented disruptions — seasons cut short, canceled opportunities, and difficult transitions from junior colleges to Division I. These weren’t normal circumstances, and they shouldn’t be treated like they were. Extending eligibility gives athletes a real chance to finish what they started.

This isn’t just about one player or one class — it’s about doing what’s right for all who were affected. JUCO athletes especially deserve the opportunity to maximize their time at the Division I level, where the playing field, support systems, and opportunities finally align.

Now is the time for the NCAA to ensure consistency and clarity. Every athlete in similar circumstances should be afforded the same opportunity to compete in 2025. This isn’t a special favor — it’s a necessary correction to years of disruption. The clock should start where it counts: at Division I.
