Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy Walkout
Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy Walkout
The Issue
article from Yahoo News:
“11-year-old Jocelynn Rojo took her own life in Texas after she was tormented by classmates who threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities and have her family deported from the US, her grieving parents have said.
Jocelynn Rojo Carranza passed away on February 8 after spending five days being treated in a Dallas hospital. This came after she was taunted with deportation threats for weeks by sixth-grade classmates at Gainesville Intermediate School, around 70 miles north of Dallas, her mother Marbella Carranza told Univision.“
ICE has been getting closer and closer, spotted in public places like the Parks Mall and schools like UTA. The district’s social media provides no information on ICE’s whereabouts and has not responded to direct messages asking them to speak out.
GPFAA students propose a school walkout. A day to march for the safety of a school full of people we care about, a day to speak our minds amidst the many injustices our city is facing. We make posters, bring flags, prepare chants; we take back our voices. Organizations and clubs at other schools, like YWLA, have planned walkouts for this same reason. Let’s be the next school to participate, let’s be the next to have our voices heard.
