This is a petition on behalf of the highschool students in Florida to increase the penalty for first time DUI's and those there after. I am creating this petition on account of 17 year old Mikeal Steele, who was killed on Sunday, October 25 due to being hit by a drunk driver. In Florida alone, there are around 10,000 lives taken every year due to alcohol or drug related car crashes. In America, there over 1.5 MILLION total DUI related arrests every year. If the penalties of DUI's are increased, to more severe penalties, there's a chance that the amount of DUI charges will be decreased due to people thinking about the risks of the punishments. Stricter DUI regulations would result in lower DUI related accidents and deaths. I hope that governor DeSantis takes these words in account and puts forth an effort to make a change in our justice system. There needs to be an end to the deaths of individuals in DUI related accidents, especially those that aren't even adults yet. There was some much more that people like Mikeal could have brought to this world, only to have it stripped from him because of someone elses foolish and selfish mistakes.
