Arkansas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty

Aug 30, 2017
Last week, Governor Hutchinson announced that he will commute Arkansas death row inmate Jason McGeHee’s death sentence to life without parole!
Earlier this year, you helped prompt McGeHee’s stay of execution after the Arkansas Board of Parole recommended that he receive relief from the Governor. This recommendation kicked in a legally mandated 30-day waiting period for public comment and additional review.
Former Judge Robert McCorkindale, now retired, wrote to the Parole Board to recommend that the Governor grant clemency. In an interview with the New York Times, Mr. McCorkindale said, “I tried a lot of capital murder cases in my years, and I saw people that I thought were much worse individuals get life without parole as opposed to the death penalty.”
Governor Hutchinson has heard from over 150,000 Arkansans and people from around the world that the death penalty is broken beyond repair. No state should be in the business of executing its citizens – and this week, thanks in part to your efforts, the state of Arkansas will execute one less person.
Thank you for everything you do!
