We hope all is well with you and yours, and thank you for signing the Stop Any Snap Election petition at: https://www.change.org/p/governor-general-mary-simon-stop-any-snap-election-call-especially-during-covid-2.

To remind you, Democracy Watch filed lawsuits challenging B.C. Premier John Horgan’s August 2020 snap election in court, and New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs’ snap election call in September 2020, and Prime Minister Trudeau’s snap election call in August 2021.

All of these snap election calls were unfair (as all snap election calls are, as they favour the ruling party, and make it impossible for people who need to plan their lives to run for office, and also usually result in lower voter turnout).

With your support, we won a precedent-setting appeal court ruling in New Brunswick at the end of 2022 restricting unfair snap election calls that favour the ruling party. Click here to see details about that ruling.  

However, unfortunately, the courts in B.C. and federally ruled that, even though politicians had said they were changing the election law to fix election dates and prohibit snap election calls, the changes were too vague to actually fix election dates or actually prohibit snap election calls.

The good thing is that the courts all ruled that politicians can change the election law to fix election dates and prohibit snap election calls – they just have to make very specific changes to do this (including still allowing for an early election to be called if a vote of non-confidence against the government happens).  Britain’s Parliament changed its election law in these specific ways years ago.
