Governor DeSantis: Remove the Miami Officials Who Illegally Canceled Our Election

The Issue

Three politicians in Miami just voted to cancel our election and give themselves an extra year in power.

This is not just politics as usual. This is a brazen power grab that tramples on the rights of every voter in Miami.

They did this in open defiance of Florida's top officials. Both Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier publicly warned the Miami Commission that canceling the election without a vote of the people was illegal and a violation of the Miami-Dade County Home Rule Charter.

  • The Miami-Dade Charter explicitly requires that any amendment to a municipal charter—such as changing election dates or term limits—must be submitted to the electors. The Florida Constitution (Art. VIII, §6(e))

These three politicians ignored the warnings and did it anyway.

They call this "reform" to increase voter turnout. But you don't strengthen democracy by canceling an election. As residents and good government advocates have said, this is a "power grab dressed up as reform".

We elected these officials for four years, not five.

This action is a slap in the face to our entire Miami community, especially to the thousands of residents who fled authoritarian regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. As Attorney General Uthmeier himself noted, Miami is home to "patriotic Cuban Americans who know better than most about regimes that cavalierly delay elections". We will not tolerate these tactics here.

This sets a dangerous precedent. As mayoral candidate Emilio González’s lawsuit states, "If they can steal an election, what else can they steal!?".

The line has been crossed.

The law has been broken.

The public trust has been shattered.

It is time for ACCOUNTABILITY.

We, the undersigned citizens, voters, and taxpayers of Florida, demand that you take immediate action to uphold the rule of law and defend our democracy.

  • Commissioner Rosado's actions meet the statutory grounds for removal by the Governor under Florida Statute §112.51.

We call on Governor Ron DeSantis to exercise his constitutional authority to suspend Mayor Francis Suarez and Commissioners Damian Pardo, Christine King, and Ralph Rosado from office for malfeasance and neglect of duty for their illegal vote to cancel the November 2025 election.

We further call on Attorney General James Uthmeier to use the full power of his office to sue the City of Miami and ensure our election is restored.

It is time to send a clear message: in Florida, the people's vote is not optional. Hold them accountable.

Let the people vote.
