MAUNA KEA UPDATES:

  1. UHH has been claiming they started TMT construction in 2019, in order to be in compliance with condition #4 of their conservation district use permit (CDUP) that requires “Any work done or construction to be done on the land shall be initiated within two (2) years of the approval of such use…” On Tuesday 11/07/23 (via livestream only) the common sense argument was made to the Land Board that construction has not begun on TMT. No public testimony taken, as only parties who submitted filings in the original 2021 motion can argue. Those parties are the Mauna Kea Hui, the Flores-Case ‘ohana, Cindy Freitas, Lanny Alan Sinkin/Temple of Lono, PUEO, UH Hilo and TMT.
  2. On November 17, 2023 the Hawaiʻi Historic Places Review Board approved KAHEA's and Mauna Kea Anaina Hou's nomination of Mauna Kea as a Traditional Cultural Property and District, significant under all qualifying criteria, to the Hawaiʻi Register of Historic Places. Additionally, the Board recommended the nomination move forward to be considered for National Register of Historic Places listing under all qualifying criteria!
  3. The National Science Foundation (NSF) haven’t heard us and they are still moving forward with an environmental review and will begin the first part of a Section 106 process for the building of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) next year - 2024.  This is in anticipation of NSF funding TMT.
