Galamsey and its related activities have caused great harm to our environment.
This is due to the pollution of our water bodies and also deforestation. Toxic substances such as Sulfric Acid and Cyanide are used in mining. These toxic substances make water treatment very costly. In turn, there is a reduction in the total supply of clean water circulating. This is done without caring about the effects and dangers this may have on trees, birds, animals, and even individuals in the various mining communities. Most of the time the activities of these illegal miners also release toxic substances into the rivers, causing a lot of diseases to many people, especially those who fish from it.
Deforestation, is part of the damages mining causes to our environment. It involves the clearing of the forest leading to cutting down of trees, to enable miners accomplish their mission, of extracting minerals.
The worst part of it all is the lack of measures to regulate and control activities and participants involved in this gruesome act of destroying our natural habitat. With the fact that the illegal miners are mostly unskillful, they also uses unprotected tools and equipment making them a big threat to the nation.
The time has dawn on us all to participate in making ILLEGAL MINING a criminal activity.
