LAKE SHEPHERDBlantyre, Malawi

14 Feb 2023
14th February
Attached is a compilation of aerial images showing the continued sedimentation into Lake Malawi from the Southern Region Water Board project on Nkhudzi Mountain, funded by Kuwait Fund.
Despite the evidence of the negative impacts to the ecology of the area, the contractors PLEM/Alghanim continue to destabilise the soils with heavy machinery and blasting of explosives, which is creating more sedimentation into the lake with every rainfall.
If PLEM continues with its proposed drainage mitigation measures the Lucerna brown, endemic cichlid fish which only breeds on Nkhudzi headland, and no where else in Malawi or the world, will become extinct due to the sedimentation of its breeding grounds.
