We consider keeping our water as pure as possible a major factor Hawaii being considered “the healthiest state in the country” and having the “highest longevity.”

We hereby petition that legislation be enacted to prohibit the addition of any chemical to our drinking water for purpose of treating the kama’aina.

Since ancient times, Hawaiians have treasured our drinking water as the spiritual fount of all life and as a precious resource that must be preserved for the benefit of all. Most major religions, including the Holy Bible in passages such as Hebrew 10:22, emphasize the significance of pure water.

We the undersigned, find that Hawaii’s water is a vital necessity of life and should be maintained free of any chemical additives, except those necessary to make it safe and potable for human consumption. Our drinking water should not be used as a means for delivery of any chemical, especially one classified as a neurotoxin, such as fluoride.

Using the drinking water system to deliver a chemical to treat people en mass for a specific disease symptom, is neither cost effective nor environmentally sound. First, industrial-grade fluoride, laden with heavy metal impurities (e.g. arsenic and lead) would needed to be used to keep costs down. Second, since only less than one percent of water is actually consumed, >99% would be discharged to the environment when washing cars, watering yards, taking showers, flushing toilets, etc.; thereby wasting our tax dollars. Unfortunately, the majority of the wastewater would be discharged through our sewage system and end up in our beautiful oceans, possibly destroying reefs and affecting marine life.

It should not be the role of government to override an individual’s freedom of choice or bypass one’s right to informed consent. Those in the subset of the population who are most vulnerable such as those with cancer, chronic kidney disease, chronic heart conditions, autoimmune disease, neurodegenerative disease, thyroid deficiency, chemical sensitivity, etc. should not be compelled to purchase purified water to protect their own health or have peace of mind.
