Hello to all of our supporters!
We are pleased to announce that Rideau-Rockcliffe Municipal Councillor Tobi Nussbaum will be moving a motion at the next Ottawa council meeting on May 27 to formally request that the federal government relocate the proposed memorial. We wholly support Councillor Nussbaum's motion that the federal government #movethememorial.
We would also like to thank MP Paul Dewar, who raised this issue in the House of Commons on Friday, May 15. Responses from the Parliamentary Secretary for Canadian Heritage, who suggested that the public was confused over the latitude of the location, were typically evasive. The Secretary should be aware that the public knows full well the proposed location of the memorial. To be clear, the proposed location is a 5000 square metre plot of land between the Supreme Court of Canada and Library and Archives Canada on Wellington Street, estimated to be worth upwards of $16 million. The space has been reserved for a federal court building since the early 1990s, and has been part of the long-term vision of the area for more than 50 years.
The NCC, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Ontario Association of Architects, the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, the Canadian Institute of Planners and many other organizations are opposed to the location. Mayor Jim Watson, Ottawa City Councillor Tobi Nussbaum and MP Paul Dewar are also opposed to the location. And then there is you, one of the over 4000 people who have signed the petition on Change.org to #movethememorial.
This memorial has become the poster child of this government's disregard for due process and public opinion, as well as their crude habit of belittling and undermining dissent. The opposition is not confused by latitudes, they are tired of platitudes!
Thank you for your signatures, your support and your comments.
