We can all agree that gambling is highly addictive and can affect anyone from all walks of life. It has been at the root of many divorces , has caused mental health issues, debt problems, domestic abuse, stealing, suicide, the list goes on!

Of course it doesn’t always start this way and many initially view it as harmless and fun.  Gambling is one of the most insidious of human vices, as it presents the illusion of easy money yet can quickly lead to financial ruin together with other serious consequences.

As with all addictions, gambling presents symptoms which are very similar to substance abuse behaviours which means the results are the same.  In fact research shows that problem gamblers are much more likely to attempt suicide!  It is an illness that requires gambling addiction treatment!

Therefore, bearing in mind the severe and well known consequences of gambling, why would this illness be PROMOTED via adverts on tv, social media, radio etc ESPECIALLY during lockdown where people are in a vulnerable position?!?  Lack of distractions, lots of spare time, financial distress, isolation and boredom are factors which will place many more people at risk of gambling beyond their means.

Unfortunately, the gambling problem doesn’t end with adults. Due to the constant stream of advertising promoting gambling, our children are more than likely to bet in later life.

Researchers at Ipsos MORI and the University of Stirling found that 96% of people aged 11-24 had been exposed to gambling marketing messages in the last month and more than likely to bet as a result.

What is ironic about this situation is that we as a country are taking extreme measures to contain the Coronavirus but yet we are allowing another form of ‘virus’ to infect our homes and our families which can have the same devastating effects! As with cigarettes, the promoting of gambling should also be banned from our tv’s, social media, radio etc.
