This past week, Ghanaian environmental activists like us received the sweetest news of all. Organized labour, the lethal weapon of the Ghanaian public, finally added its voice to what has become an existential threat that can no longer be ignored. Better late than never, goes the adage. And boy did they go big.

In its charged message to the President, organized labour demanded immediate actions from the president including

"An immediate declaration of a state of emergency incorporating:

• An order to halt all forms of mining (legal & illegal) in forest reserves and around waterbodies.
• Immediate evacuation of all mining equipment in forest reserves and around waterbodies.
• The deployment of police and military with full orders to remove / destroy all mining equipment around waterbodies and forest reserves
• Immediate revocation of LI2462 and withdrawal of all licenses granted for mining in forest and protected reserves and around waterbodies.
• Establishment of a special court to prosecute perpetrators of this horrible crime."
