Last week, we experienced some of the worse flooding in the country. The situation in galamsey communities in the western and western north regions of Ghana was devastating. The flood brought to town all the mercury and cyanide in the many galamsey pits dotted around many of these communities. One can only imagine how the mothers and children who had nowhere to run to made it through the most difficult moments.
As for the long term impact of this pollution, your guess is as good as mine. It's no doubt that the galamsey / irresponsible mining situation in Ghana is now an existential threat to all.
