I'm glad to share that we have entered a new milestone in this journey of advocating for Ghana's environment, especially the land and rivers that have been destroyed by irresponsible mining.
As we dug deeper, it became clear that much of our current problems stem from the bad agreements we have signed and continue to sign when it comes to exploitation of Ghana's natural resources - be it gold, bauxite and other minerals, and recently oil and gas. Our overreliance on royalties, a colonial relic, either due to lack of interest or corruption or other considerations, means that most of the time, the government earns very little from these resources, resulting in even less or nothing at all for the local communities.
The extreme poverty in the midst of plenty, coupled with unbridled corruption, among other things, have contributed significantly to the environmental problems that we now face.
Fortunately, after many months, we have a legal team that is ready to take up our request to do a legislative desk review of existing legislation and institute a public interest action to
a. establish before the Court, that the current practice of the government and the state of the law does not uphold the interest of Ghana as the owner of the resources extracted and
b. Seek order(s) to compel the government to adopt measures that put the interest of Ghana first.
For this, they are charging us a highly discounted fee of 29,000 Ghana Cedis, or $4,500 USD.
