It has been a while. I almost thought we had succeeded in making a dent in Ghana's Illegal Galamsey / Irresponsible Mining problem. I'm sad to say we have not.
The Government of Ghana is not really genuinely interested in saving the country's waterbodies, arable land and forest reserves from destruction. If they did, they wouldn't insist on allowing government sympathizers, Presidential appointees and party faithfuls in the various districts to continue to mine undisturbed.
Today, in Kwawblay, aka Kwabre, a critical watershed in Nzema in the Western region, whose inhabitants are mostly peasant farmers, has been besieged by illegal miners who have been contracted by greedy political and traditional leaders in the area to mine the land. This is in spite of several protests, news conferences and appeals by many Nzemas and sympathizers home and abroad to stop this in order to avoid subjecting Kwabre and its environs to potential flooding, loss of drinking water and disease.
I am renewing our call to all who can, to add your voices to our plea to let the Government of Ghana know to do right by the people, especially the people of Kwawblay.
