Ghana's Galamsey story, the new Twist

As the Government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo fights to assert its authority over the rivers, waterbodies and forest reserves in Ghana that have been utterly destroyed by irresponsible and illegal mining, the chickens, it seems, are coming home to roost.

Tired of playing Russian roulette with people bent on destroying Ghanaian rivers and forest reserves, the government has tasked soldiers embarking on Operation Halt II, the operation to rid the rivers and forest reserves of irresponsible miners, to destroy equipment of recalcitrant players on sight. Now that  the venerable Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and many Ghanaians have dared the government to go after its own people said to be knee deep in #Galamsey and irresponsible mining, we have began to see hitherto untouchables being touched.

What is concerning is that a Canadian company, Xtra-Gold Mining Ltd, listed on the Toronto Stock exchange (TSX)  as  XTG-T, has turned out to be one of those companies. Fronted by a kingpin of the ruling NPP party, this company is said to be behind a good deal of mining happening in the Atiwa district of the Eastern Region.

What is disturbing is that a #Canadian company, which one would expect should know better, would be one of those hiding behind well connected political persons to exacerbate the environmental degradation currently happening in Ghana. It is my hope that Xtra-Gold Mining Ltd. and environmentalists in #Canada would take an interest in the unbridled degradation and destruction of waterbodies currently going on in Ghana and do the right thing. #WaterisLife #StopGalamsey #Saveourrivers #Saveourfuture
