Today, March 16, 2021 marks exactly one week since we delivered the petition to "Stop Galamsey Devastation in Rural Ghana" to the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Speaker of Ghana's Parliament, the Embassy of China in Ghana, Ghana Christian Council, The Chief Imam, Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Ghana House of Chiefs, the Minerals Commission among others.
One week on, we are yet to receive an acknowledgement from any of these personalities / institutions / organizations. I get it that there is a lot going on in the country. However, have we become too used to the mercury polluted waterbodies that we don't see the urgency? Or, is the view among Ghanaians that these destructive activities have the blessings of political bigwigs to be believed? For now I will give our leaders the benefit of the doubt.
One thing to note, Mr President, the looming water crisis, devastation and associated hardship from irresponsible mining will not wait for us. It does not. As the attached video shows, we may be too late already.
