The Trump administration has indicated that federal law enforcement officers from several federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security will be deployed to Baltimore to “quell violence, riots and terrorism.”

These federal agents are not here to legitimately protect federal property or federal officials, and are acting outside of their authority. This is a gross violation of the state of Maryland’s police power.

There are no “riots” or “terrorism” occurring in Baltimore. Protests have been nonviolent and peaceful. These unmarked officers are being used to suppress the first amendment rights of protestors and those that oppose racism and police brutality. Their use is also a blatant violation of the 10th Amendment, namely the states right to enforce state law.

These actions are reminiscent of Nazi Germany and the Gestapo/Secret Police. They are literally abducting and brutalizing peaceful protestors (including teenagers, veterans and more) who are simply trying to encourage change.

Governor Larry Hogan, regardless of political affiliation or opinions on social justice issues, violating the rights of Marylanders is unacceptable. These officers are not acting within the reasonable scope of their duties.

Please use your influence and power as Governor to bar DHS from becoming involved with protests. Please restrict DHS officers from enforcing state law. Please enforce all state laws violated by federal officers. Please alert the public to what this administration is doing to the citizens under your protection.
