On Dec. 21, 2013, it was this tiny girl’s turn to be rescued from THE HORRID PLACE. She stank to high heaven. She shrank from any human touch curling her feet tightly into her body, curling her body into a tight ball probably praying that she would be overlooked. But she wasn’t…and on that blessed day, F17 was crated in the transporters’ van with several other terrified dogs. Ann McHugh gave her first taste of dehydrated chicken. She was named Noelle. Noelle spent several months in her first foster home. But for some reason, she did not seem to be able to break free of her past. The decision was made to send her to Ontario to see what my three Kees and I could do. Donnie, Lucy and Archie are used to rescues and seem to have a knack for turning them into real dogs. On June 14, 2014, I picked up the tiniest adult Kees I had ever seen…22 lbs, a miniature of the others, barely an armful of silvery coat. Noelle is probably around three years old, is very healthy now, loves to go for walks and will play “touch-me” on her own terms (not on mine). Like all the 101’s, Noelle loves soft things. She will quietly steal toys, socks, tea towels and put them in her bed. Once she took my knitting, the ball of yarn unravelling behind her. A few days later, a little knitted blankie arrived in the mail for her. When the weather became unbearably hot, I bought a wading pool for the dogs. The others treat it like a giant water bowl. Not Noelle…it is her throne, her private lounger. She climbs right in and lies down. Then drips water all over the house while I try to catch her with a towel. I admit I have spoiled her…to get her used to being touched, I would put her on my bed every day for an hour and stroke her until her body relaxed and she dozed off. Now I wake up every morning to find her cuddled between me and Donnie (the only dog with bed privileges). We go on several walks every day…with Archie for play, with Lucy for manners, with Donnie for snuffling lessons. And sometimes with all of them so they can all snicker at me trying to keep leashes untangled. Noelle will now approach every person she meets and expect to be touched. You should see the look on her face if they walk by her! She loves to meet other dogs. Noelle finds cats and squirrels to be interesting creatures but she doesn’t chase them. She has a generous live and let live attitude.
