City of Houston Bails Out Landlords Instead of Directly Helping Tenants

This past Wednesday, the city of Houston used $15 million of $400 million of federal CARES legislation money to bailout landlords instead of directly making it available to residents in need.

From the Houston Chronicle: "The vote was unanimous though several council members raised concerns about equity, since landlords have to apply for the assistance before their tenants and because the money will be disbursed out on a first-come, first-served basis. If landlords do not apply, their tenants will not be able to get the relief."

This is equivalent to the government giving $350 billion of the Paycheck Protection Program to big banks to administer to large corporations while small businesses miss out on the loan, are saddled with unforgiving debt, and still unable to pay its workers. 

Esto es equivalente a que el gobierno otorgue $ 350 mil millones del Programa de protección de cheques de pago a los grandes bancos para administrar a las grandes corporaciones, mientras que las pequeñas empresas pierden el préstamo, se ven cargadas con una deuda implacable y aún no pueden pagar a sus trabajadores.

Enough is enough! Tell the city and state to stop using our taxpayers' money to bailout the rich while working people sink into greater poverty and homelessness.
