Shanti Sahyog Center for Nonviolence
Jan 26, 2021

On the 72nd anniversary of India’s Republic Day, let’s reaffirm our faith in our Republic and the Constitution of India, which came into effect in the year 1950. Let us celebrate this day with unity & harmony, recalling the sacrifices of our national heroes and freedom fighters to give us ‘Swaraj’ – Mahatma Gandhi’s term - for freedom from colonial rule; self-rule:

“It is Swaraj when we learn to rule ourselves."

During the period when Gandhi’s freedom movement acquired its mass base, he repeatedly explained the concept of Swaraj in terms of the political, economic, social and moral rights of the downtrodden and exploited Indian masses. Thus, Gandhi’s concept of Swaraj, is all-encompassing, including economic and political freedom as well as personal growth.  Says Gandhi:

“To my mind, Swaraj based on nonviolence is the fulfilment of the constructive programme.”
