“God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.” Rudyard Kipling
Mother's Day is a celebration of motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
In his formative years, Mahatma Gandhi was influenced by his mother, Putlibai, who imparted in him a strong sense of personal ethics and compassion that is conveyed in Gandhi’s favourite prayer song by the 15th C religious reformer, Narsinha Mehta, “Vaishnav Jan to tene re kahiye je peed parai jane re” (A godlike man is one, who feels another’s pain, who shares another’s sorrow!)
Julia Ward Howe who was a prominent American abolitionist and feminist, nursed and tended the wounded during the Civil War, and worked with the widows and orphans of soldiers on both sides of the war, realized that the effects of war go far beyond the killing of soldiers in battle. She, therefore, called out to women to, “rise up through the ashes and devastation,” urging a Mother’s Day dedicated to peace.
Likewise, this Mother’s Day, dear Signatories, we appeal to all women to unite for peace in the world. Join & Support our #no. 10 #MothersForPeace. Let us also all call upon our leaders to heed our petition #ChooseNonviolentDefence, and make a directional shift from military defence towards introducing Nonviolent Defence, in nation states, thereby paving the way for a World Beyond War.
In the present age, where the global military expenditure is USD 3.5 Million+ per minute, and nuclear weapons abound, where violence, racism, communalism, religious intolerance, sectarianism, fundamentalism and terrorism raise their ugly heads, Mother’s Day is an occasion to awake and dedicate ourselves, on behalf of mothers all around the world, to amity and harmony.
There would be no better way to honor our mothers!
