The Issue

BC Racing Miata Coilovers can be found on a wide range of vehicles, including RC cars, regular passenger cars, race cars, and 4x4s. On new cars, they're sometimes employed as a factory suspension option. Coilovers are a common component of MacPherson struts and are utilized in double-wishbone suspension systems.

Full coilovers and slip-on coilovers are the two most common types of coilovers. Full coilovers come with a factory-installed shock absorber, whereas slip-on coilovers require the dampers and springs to be purchased separately and then constructed.

Coilovers can be used to lessen weight transfer when the vehicle changes direction by lowering the vehicle's center of gravity and increasing the roll stiffness.

Components

A Coilover is made up of a damper and a coil spring that surrounds it. Before installation, the damper and spring are constructed as a unit, and they are replaced as a unit when one of the sub-components breaks.

Coilovers can be adjusted in some cases. The ride height and preload of most, if not all, adjustable coilovers can be modified with a simply threaded spring perch that looks like a nut.

The damper, coil spring, bushing, bump stops, upper and lower mounts, various nuts and washers, threaded sleeves, and collars are all parts of a Coilover.

Springs

Coilover springs are designed to keep the chassis from bottoming out, to support each individual wheel on the vehicle, and to mitigate or reduce body roll during turning and cornering, especially at higher speeds. The springs also aid in reducing squatting and diving when accelerating and decelerating. They're frequently used to alter the ride height of a vehicle, which has a direct impact on handling and comfort.

Preloading in the spring

Preload is the amount of pressure applied to spring over the length of its compression. A stronger spring has a greater preload, while a softer spring with more travel has a lower preload. If the Coilover uses progressive springs, this is true. Preload has no effect on spring rate on coilovers with linear springs. More preload improves cornering grip, but too much preload makes a spring excessively rigid. Ride height must be modified by preload in coilovers with adjustable spring seats, linear rate springs, and no helper or tender springs. This might be a problem in vehicles if the ride height needs to be reduced yet the springs are already stiff.

Dampers

A mono-tube coilover is a damping case with a single-piston and rod assembly that performs both compression and rebound. A larger mono-tube shock may displace more hydraulic fluid, allowing it to react more quickly to tiny suspension movements than twin-tube shocks.

A twin-tube coilover is more difficult to build than a mono-tube coilover. An inner cylinder goes up and down, and an outer cylinder serves as a hydraulic reserve in twin tubes. This design enables a longer suspension stroke, which improves ride quality and handling.
